Judge sentences LeNature's consultant to 10 years behind bars

A McMurray business consultant asked a federal judge for leniency on Thursday, but the judge refused to change his sentence.

Andrew Murin, 55, had planned to make his plea, as well as call several character witnesses, but U.S. District Judge Alan Bloch skipped that part of the hearing and sentenced Murin to 10 years in prison and five years of probation, ordering him to pay $259 million in restitution.

Murin pleaded guilty in June to mail fraud in connection with the LeNature's Inc. scam that drove the Latrobe bottling company into bankruptcy and bilked investors and lending institutions out of more than $685 million.

After a conversation with Murin's attorney and the prosecutor, the judge ultimately agreed to hear Murin's plea.

Murin then apologized for helping former CEO Gregory Podlucky forge bank documents and deceive creditors.

"Had I known the full scope of what Greg Podlucky was doing, I would have quit on the spot," he said.

The judge then revoked Murin's bond and ordered the federal marshals to take him into custody.

Bloch last week sentenced Podlucky, 51, of Ligonier to 20 years in prison. His Ponzi scheme used falsified accounts to persuade lending institutions to invest in the company. He used money from later investors to make payments to earlier investors while pocketing most of the money.
