Water leaks are eroding land beneath a set of city-owned steps in Carrick.
Dave Baber, who lives on Redrose Avenue, which turns into one of Pittsburgh's trademark concrete staircases at the corner of Redrose and Madeline Street, has watched the hillside beneath the top of the steps slowly erode. The erosion has exposed the staircase's support pillars. Large cracks in them show signs of wear.
"There's a big gully where the water and sewage is leaking out," Baber said. "You could just tell there's something that ain't working right."
Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority spokeswoman Holly Parada said a leaking storm water basin is causing at least some of the problems. Parada says crews will replace the basin line as soon as possible.
Philip J. Cynar, spokesman for Pennsylvania American Water Co., said his company also is aware of the problem beneath the steps of Redrose Avenue and is trying to determine whether any of its lines are leaking. Pennsylvania American serves most of Pittsburgh's southern neighborhoods.
"We are in the process of investigating that with our leak detection crew and trying to pinpoint the source of that leak so that we can make corrections," Cynar said.
Mike Gable, assistant director the Pittsburgh's Public Works Department, couldn't immediately determine if the steps of Redrose Avenue are on the city's list for repairs.
