Just fix it: Gregg Station Road Bridge

Harry Marks, of Oakdale, is tired of driving out of his way to get to Carnegie and wants to know when the Gregg Station Road Bridge, in Collier, will be replaced. Following Gregg Station Road to Nike Site Road, motorists can cut across a wide loop of Noblestown Road. "It's a direct shortcut when you're going from Oakdale into Carnegie," Marks said. The bridge was destroyed during the flooding that followed Hurricane Ivan in September 2004. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency is providing money to help replace the bridge, but the agency's requirements have slowed the start of the work. The old bridge, which leads to the U.S. Army Reserve's Charles E. Kelly Support Center, was designed to handle the weight of a tank. Although the base is scheduled to close by the end of 2011, federal law says any bridge replaced with FEMA money has to meet the original bridge's specifications. Collier has to redesign plans for the single-lane bridge, to meet the higher weight limit, before it could seeks bids for the project. Collier Manager Jeanne Creese said the township has awarded the contract to demolish and remove the damaged bridge, and that work should begin next week. "We wanted to make sure that happened before any spring floods," she said. Construction of a replacement could start this spring. FEMA is paying for 75 percent of the $425,000 project. The state is paying the rest. Who's responsible: Collier Manager Jeanne Creese, 412-279-2525
