Keep cards coming

A few years ago, I wrote a letter to this newspaper about the decline in people sending Christmas cards. I didn't think it would change a lot of people's minds.

But while I've already received cards from many old friends, I believe the younger generation is losing real contact with their friends and family. Do young people really think that a mass text or email saying “Merry Christmas” is personal?

I love old traditions. I like taking out the old cards from friends and family, and I get comfort from the cards sent by wonderful people who since have passed away.

One company has a TV commercial offering not only to print your photo cards but also to mail them if you send your address list.

Really? I know we are busy, but how long does it take to mail a real card, or make a phone call and say “Merry Christmas”?

You won't be able to look back at those wonderful cards soon, but you will be able to read the mass impersonal text or email — as long as you don't delete it.

Listen to the Jim Reeves song “There's an Old Christmas Card.”

Maybe then you will see what's important in this age of electronics.
