It's been unseasonably warm in Western Pennsylvania this week, but everyone knows colder weather is sure to return soon.

That's why Port Vue Citizens Committee has started its annual clothing drive, Keep Port Vue Warm.

Committee president Steve Hvozdik discussed the program at the borough council meeting Wednesday.

“There's a lot of needy people in Port Vue,” Hvozdik said. “Some can't afford new coats and stuff like that. This is our third year doing it. It's always been a big success. There's always been a need, a lot of people come collecting the coats. Whatever's left over we donate to homeless shelters and (veterans organizations).”

The committee is asking for donations of new or slightly used coats, hoodies, snowsuits, hats, mittens, sweatshirts and other winter wear.

Collection boxes can be found outside the Dollar General along Washington Boulevard or in the lobby of the borough building.

The collection lasts through the end of the month, with distribution in December. A date has not been scheduled yet.

Mayor Brien Hranics said Keep Port Vue Warm is another great program the committee organizes to help borough residents.

“It's another instance of how we show we care and look out for each other,” Hranics said. “Those that have more give to those that have less. It shows it's a nice place to live to bring up your kids to learn about caring and the basic values in life. We tend to get caught up in our own well-being and what we have. It's nice to see people looking to share the wealth and give to those who don't have as much.”

All motions made Wednesday passed unanimously. Councilman Doug Junecko was absent.

Council accepted a tax-anticipation note proposal from First Commonwealth Bank for $300,000 at a 1.7 percent interest rate.

Jeffrey Keifer was hired as a substitute crossing guard. His rate of pay was unavailable.

Council accepted a proposal from Mark A. Lazzaro to perform zoning and Uniform Construction Code services for the borough. Cost was unavailable.

Council approved hiring a part-time police officer subject to a background check. Councilors said they do not want to release the candidate's name until the prospective officer clears employment screening.

Port Vue's light-up night is set for 7 p.m. Dec. 4.

Councilwoman Pamela Myers announced the borough's leaf collection program will take place the week of Nov. 16. Residents should rake their leaves to the curb. For more information, call the borough office at 412-664-9323.

South Allegheny High School students will be raking leaves as part of a fundraiser. Any donation will be accepted. For more information, email jmccay@southallegheny.org.
