Self-proclaimed "Sausage King" Stuart Alexander, who was on California's death row for gunning down three meat inspectors, has died of undetermined causes.
Alexander, 44, had been treated repeatedly for mental problems at San Quentin and at a prison medical facility since a San Mateo County, Calif., jury found him guilty in February of the June 2000 slayings of three state and federal meat inspectors.
Alexander had been under a suicide watch since Christmas, but officials said his death early Tuesday did not appear to be suicide.
"At long last, the victims have some justice," John Quadros, a brother of one of the victims, told The Los Angeles Times. "We won't have to wait another 20 to 25 years for the execution."
A video camera at Alexander's San Leandro, Calif., factory captured the shootings of Thomas Quadros, Jean Hillery and William Shaline -- the first agricultural agents killed in the line of duty since meat inspections were started nearly a century ago.
