Deer Lakes might be near the bottom of Section 1-AA, but the Lancers gave Ford City a scare.
Ally Cujas had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to help the Sabers hold on for a 38-32 win at Deer Lakes in a section game Thursday night.
Bethany Meyer and Christina Davis added seven points each for Ford City (10-4, 5-1), which went 3-1 while playing section games each of the past four nights, with the only loss coming to undefeated Burrell.
Maureen Hutchinson scored 11 points to lead Deer Lakes (5-7, 1-5).
West Shamokin 35, Apollo-Ridge 24 — Lizzy Cornish scored 15 points to lead West Shamokin, and the Wolves (7-7, 3-2) pulled away in the second half for a crucial Section 1-AA win on the road.
Julia DeMeno had seven points to lead Apollo-Ridge (9-4, 2-4), which was held to three points in the third quarter after a 13-13 tie at halftime.
Freeport 55, Knoch 43 — Zoe Soilis led a balanced attack for the Yellowjackets (7-7, 4-3) with 15 points in a Section 1-AAA win at home. Haley Connor added 13 points and led Freeport with three assists and three steals. Macy Smolic posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Allie Megahan paced Knoch (2-11, 2-5) with 12 points.
Burrell 57, Leechburg 5 — Sydney Bordonaro tallied 14 points for the Class AA No. 2 Bucs (14-0, 6-0), who opened the game with a 30-2 advantage in the first quarter at Leechburg (1-11, 0-5).
Hockey
Armstrong 6, Franklin Regional 1 — Hunter Grafton had a goal and two assists in a Class AA win for Armstrong, which led 5-0 after the first period at the Belmont Ice Complex.
Jacob Lorigan and Taylor Smouse combined to make 20 saves for the Riverhawks (10-4-0). Zane Wichowski, John Phelps, Brandon Choncek, Coby Toy and Christian Miller scored for Armstrong.
Sean McDonald had 40 saves for Franklin Regional (0-12-0).
Freeport 8, South Park 4 — Nick Rusak had three goals and two assists before receiving a game misconduct for Freeport in a penalty-laden Class A game at the Belmont Ice Complex.
Thomas Intrieri had two goals, and Stone Haberstroh, Hunter Kepple and Eric Waddell also scored for Freeport (6-3-2), which got three assists from Robert Reichenbaugh. Tanner Orr had two goals for South Park (1-13-0).
Swimming
Otwell lowers record — Freeport swimmer Bria Otwell broke her own school record in the 100-yard butterfly by swimming a time of 1 minute, 2.27 seconds in the Yellowjackets' meet at Shady Side Academy. The Indians took the team win in both boys (85-58) and girls (78-68).
Wrestling
West Shamokin 48, Summit Academy 36 — West Shamokin got six falls and picked up their first Section 3B-AA win of the season on the road at Summit Academy Wednesday night.
Reno Alcantara (132 pounds), Bryan Waldor (138), Nathan Beatty (145), Brian Brown (170), Brendan Glover (182) and John Wissinger (195) pinned their opponents. William Hockenberry (106) and Logan Stancombe (120) won by forfeit to get the remaining points for the Wolves (4-6, 1-3).
