Kittanning police to distribute gun locks to area residents
KITTANNING — Kittanning gun owners will receive free gun locks thanks to the National Shooting Sports Foundation and a U.S. Department of Justice grant.
Kittanning police Chief Ed Cassesse said he will give a free gun lock to Kittanning residents on request. He said has 200 locks to distribute and they may be used on virtually any pistol or revolver and most rifles and shotguns.
The goal of the program is to promote safe firearm handling and storage practices among firearm owners, Cassesse said. He added that no firearm should be left lying around or stored in a manner where children or unauthorized persons have access to it.
Each lock comes with two keys and a set of instructions for use and installation of the lock and a list of safe firearm handling procedures. The cable style locks require that firearms be unloaded before they can be secured.
Project ChildSafe is part of the Project HomeSafe program. Both programs were developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation to provide firearms safety information to nontraditional firearm owners. The organization has been involved in promoting firearm safety for more than 40 years.

Cassesse said free gun locks may be picked up at the Kittanning police station between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. Gun owners are requested to take only one lock per household.
