Kuwait’s ministry of social affairs and labor announced Tuesday that it licensed the country’s first human rights’ watchdog. The official Kuwaiti News Agency, KUNA, said Minister Faisal al-Hajji issued a ministerial decree licensing the Kuwaiti Organization for Human Rights upon a decision by the council of ministers taken last August. The organizations’ main aim is to “spread awareness among the population about human rights charters and documents and encourage them to respect basic rights of all humans, be they Kuwaitis or foreigners.” It said the group, run by an 11-member executive committee, will be cooperating with human rights organizations around the world. © Copyright 2004 by United Press International
