WASHINGTON - Washington High's girls are ranked first in the state in the Class AA rankings.
Monessen coach Major Corley won't disagree.
"They're the best team we played," said Corley after his Class A Lady Greyhounds dropped a hard-fought 58-53 decision to the Lady Prexies Tuesday.
"The difference was they were taller than us," continued Corley. "They outrebounded us and were getting a lot of second and third shots. The small court didn't help because it cut down our fast break."
Junior Charel Allen had a game-high 33 points for Monessen (13-3), which trailed 27-23 at halftime and 43-37 going into the final period.
The Lady Greyhounds managed to pull into a 43-43 tie when Allen hit a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter. However, the visitors could not gain the lead.
Monessen trailed 56-53 with 18 seconds left when Allen missed a shot inside and the hosts rebounded and converted two free throws to put the game out of reach.
Six-foot senior Amber Harris (23) and Jamee Bush (16) combined for 39 points for Washington (11-3).
Monessen is home tonight with Jefferson-Morgan.
