An Allegheny County judge sentenced a Larimer man on Wednesday to 15 to 40 years in prison for stabbing a man 118 times in East Liberty.

Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey A. Manning sentenced Anthony Phillips, 25, for the Sept. 27, 2009, killing of Stephen Grandison, 21, of Homewood. Phillips pleaded guilty but mentally ill in May to third-degree murder.

Psychiatrists testified about Phillips’ mental health issues, and he apologized to the victim’s family.

“There’s not enough words to express my sorrow,” Phillips said. “I can’t bring my friend back. I caused his death. There’s no excuse to take someone’s life. I still think it’s a dream sometimes, but it’s not.”
