Latest 'Metroid Prime' game translates well to Nintendo DS

The Galactic Federation has requested its uber hunter, Samus Aran, to retrieve artifacts left behind by an extinct warrior race that hid them throughout the Tetra Galaxy. These artifacts, when pieced together, form what was known to these ancient people as the "Ultimate Power." But this isn't your typical recovery mission; the word has hit the street, and a pack of elite bounty hunters have their eyes on the treasure -- promising to make it a hairy race to the finish for the nimble lady warrior. Within the game's "adventure mode," you'll play the role of Shamus as she travels the Alimbic Cluster solving puzzles, battling rogue bounty hunters and eliminating nasty traps left by the ancient Alimbics on various planetoids and space stations. Using the upper screen of the DS to navigate Shamus' first- and third-person points-of-view, gamers will use the lower screen to switch in and out of "Morph Ball," select weapons, use the scan and combat visors, check the radar for enemies, and view the level map. For those who like to teeter outside the constrictions of the "Hunter" storyline, Multiplayer Mode allows the owner of the game card to host as many as three other players for arena-style battles via Wi-Fi connections. Players can select Samus or any of the other six "unlocked" hunters for lightning-quick, head-to-head action -- or, if playing alone, fight against a computer-controlled "Bot." Players can also link up to the "Hunters" Web site to seek gamers from across the globe and play games such as "defend your turf," "capture the pieces," "elimination" or "king of the hill" in more than 20 different arenas. Not to be confused with the "Metroid Prime Hunt" demo that comes with the Nintendo DS system, "Hunters" is a bold venture for fans of the series and stands up nicely to the Gamecube's "Metroid Prime: Echoes" litmus. The cinematics and in-game graphics translate well on the miniature platform without losing any of the slickness, and the controls are easy to grasp, allowing you to dive right into the fun.
