For the second time in five years, the headstone marking George H. Dixon’s final resting place has been damaged.

State police Tuesday said a 20-year-old Latrobe man is a suspect in the May incident that caused about $4,000 in damage at two grave sites in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery, Hempfield.

Charges of criminal mischief are pending in the case, police said.

“He wrecked it. I went over, and I saw it. It was cracked in half,” said Jane Dixon, 80, of Greensburg.

A cemetery office worker informed her last month of the damage to the headstone, he said yesterday.

According to police, Dixon’s headstone and another headstone were damaged between May 13 and May 19 at the cemetery at Roseytown and Donohoe roads.

George H. Dixon died in December 2000. The original headstone was struck by a motorist about five years ago, his widow said.

“It was knocked 20, 30 feet away from the grave site. There were car pieces all around,” Dixon said.

The driver’s insurance paid for that stone’s replacement, Dixon said.

The newly damaged headstone has been removed, and Dixon has decided to replace it with something smaller this time.

“We will have to see what happens. I hope he has insurance to pay for it,” she said.

A Greensburg man, whose wife’s headstone also was vandalized, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

The investigation is continuing, police said.
