Where others might see a serious need for a plumber, Jeffrey Rigo sees the divine. The 30-year-old Lawrenceville man stepped out of his shower Saturday evening and saw what he says looks like an image of the son of God staring back at him. “I got out of the shower and yelled, ‘Jesus Christ!'” he said yesterday. “My girlfriend asked me, ‘Oh, my God, what is it?'” “I pointed and responded, ‘No, Jesus Christ!'” A few hours later, Rigo posted the image on eBay, offering the section of plaster wall for a starting bid of $1,999.99. So far, only a few fake bids have been placed. Those bids were terminated. Rigo isn’t the first person to see what he believes is a religious image and offer it for sale on the Internet. Diana Duyser, of Florida, netted a cool $28,000 in November for a 10-year-old grilled cheese sandwich — missing a bite — that she says bears the image of the Virgin Mary. The owners of an online casino placed the winning bid. Rigo, who isn’t religious and doesn’t believe the image is a sign from God, said he’s approaching the auction lightheartedly. “The entire auction and its proceedings are not meant to be taken seriously,” Rigo said yesterday in an e-mail interview. “There is no hidden agenda here, no religious or political commentary to be derived.”He doesn’t mean to offend those who might take the image seriously, he said. “I do realize that there are a large number of people around the world who do take these matters quite seriously,” he wrote. He cut out the section of plaster with a rotary tool, revealing the source of a water leak inside the wall. He then fabricated a box, filled it with plaster and placed the wall segment inside the box to dry. Rigo, an Internet network engineer, said he will increase the bidding in $1,000 increments for the section of wall, which he’s calling “Shower Jesus.” The eBay title is “Jesus Christ Image Icon Materializes in Plaster Wall.” The auction runs for five more days.
