A former U.S. Steel corporate lawyer will serve on the disciplinary board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

Stephan K. Todd, 63, of Cranberry joins 15 other members of the voluntary board, court officials said Friday.

"I've always been active in the legal community, the bar association and the community in general," said Todd, husband of Supreme Court Justice Debra Todd.

He said he was approached by Justice Max Baer and consulted with his wife before agreeing to serve.

"If anyone thought there was a problem, I wouldn't have done it," Todd said.

Debra Todd abstained when the court voted on her husband's nomination, said Elaine Bixler, secretary of the disciplinary board.

"We've had other family members serve on the board before, and it didn't pose a problem," Bixler said.

The board is an independent agency that offers the Supreme Court recommendations about licensing and disciplinary issues concerning the state's attorneys. The board consists of 14 lawyers and two non-lawyers. None is paid.

"It's a critical function," Stephan Todd said. "The ethical standards of the bar are essential."

Todd retired in 2007 as U.S. Steel's vice president of law and environmental affairs after 31 years with the company. Early in his career, Todd served as a lawyer with the Army. He retired from the Army Reserve as a colonel.

He is president of the Allegheny County Bar Foundation, a member of Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation and a participant of Pittsburgh Civic Light Orchestra. He is a former governor of the Bar Association and a former board member of the American Corporate Counsel Association Chapter of Western Pennsylvania and the Neighborhood Legal Services Agency.
