Kennywood Entertainment has laid off 10 people at its historic amusement park in West Mifflin and its two other locations locally to save money in the tough economy, said a spokesman.

The company eliminated two jobs at Kennywood Park, two at Sandcastle Waterpark in West Homestead, and four at Idlewild & Soak Zone in Ligonier. The jobs, seasonal as well as management positions, were cut a week ago.

“Every decision like this is difficult, but with the continuing challenges of the economy, it’s important to manage our business even more productively,” said Kennywood Entertainment spokesman Jeff Filicko.

The moves come after Parques Reunidos of Madrid, which acquired Kennywood Entertainment last June, reorganized its North American operations in December. That included Peter McAneny’s departure as president of Kennywood, and his position is not being filled, said Filicko.

Kennywood Park employs most of the company’s off-season work force, now at 100, as well as about 1,500 of the three venue’s 2,300 people during their warm-season peak.
