Leader Times roundup: West Shamokin boys basketball coach earns 1st victory
A fast start coupled with a strong shooting night from Jarret Kintz helped West Shamokin get Judd McCullough his first victory as the boys varsity basketball coach.
Kintz scored a game-high 20 points and connected on four 3-pointers as West Shamokin beat Springdale, 65-42, on Monday night.
McCullough spent the past three seasons as West Shamokin’s girls coach before moving to the boys team.
Kintz shot 8 for 12 from the field. The Wolves (1-2) outscored the Dynamos, 24-7, in the first quarter and led 31-16 at halftime.
Ryan Bradigan-Barnett scored 14 points for West Shamokin, Drew Orlosky added 11 points and Brandon Stover had nine assists.
Leechburg 62, Sto-Rox 42 — Leechburg outscored Sto-Rox, 37-25, in the second half as the Blue Devils (1-2) rolled past the Vikings (0-1) in a nonsection game.
Blake Steininger scored a team-high 18 points, J.B. Burtick added 16 and Corey Nulph 12 for the Blue Devils.
Girls basketball
Armstrong 57, Allderdice 35 — After a sluggish first half, Armstrong (2-1) had 39 second-half points against Allderdice (0-3) in a nonconference matchup.
Kenzie Lasher scored a game-high 19 points, Taylar Wolfe had 12 points and Elise Hulings 11 for Armstrong.
Indiana 46, Freeport 29 — Zoe Soilis scored 14 points, and Jenna Manke added 13, but Freeport (1-2) dropped a nonsection game to Class AAA Indiana (3-0). The Yellowjackets trailed by seven entering the fourth quarter but were outscored 15-5 in the final eight minutes.
Highlands 39, Apollo-Ridge 31 — Megan Bonelli scored a team-high 15 points, and Mariah Laird added 10 but Apollo-Ridge (1-3) dropped a nonsection game to Highlands (3-0).
