Leps brace for 'C-boys'

The first time Chartiers Valley's Beau Carson touched the football against Belle Vernon Area in last year's Big 7 Conference opener at James Weir Stadium, he raced 70 yards for a touchdown on the game's second play in the opening 90 seconds.

It was an indication of things to come.

Carson finished with 171 yards on seven carries as the Colts coasted to a 62-0 victory to deal the Leps the worst defeat in the school's history.

Chartiers Valley scored on every one of their nine possessions and put the mercy rule into effect with a 35-0 lead with 7:01 left in the first half.

Carson is back as the Colts' leading rusher but he's had to take a back seat to sophomore quarterback Wayne Capers going into tonight's Big 7 home opener at seven o'clock in a battle of unbeatens.

The son of a former Pittsburgh Steeler receiver, Capers has put up impressive numbers throwing the football.

He's completed 13 of 18 passes for 346 yards and five touchdowns.

"Capers is fabulous," said Chartiers Valley coach Chris Saluga. "We knew for years what he can do and it's nice to see him validate it. What I really like is his enthusiasm and decision making."

Capers ended up starting at the tail end of the 2008 campaign when starting quarterback Santino Coury was lost for the season with an injury in the overtime victory over Ringgold.

While Capers has been stealing the headlines, Carson hasn't been a slouch.

He's scored five touchdowns including four on passes from Capers.

"Carson is sensational," said Saluga.

The C-boys have led a Chartiers Valley offense, which has piled up 746 total offense yards including 400 on the ground.

Chartiers Valley has impressed first-year BVA coach Aaron Krepps.

'They're very athletic with a lot of speed," he said. "Capers throws well and Carson is a good receiver."

Meanwhile, BVA can counter with two offensive weapons of their own in running backs Matt Green and Cory Williams.

Green is averaging almost 13 yards a carry with 181 in 14 runs with Williams adding 147 in 23 carries.

Green has five touchdowns and Williams three.

Scoring hasn't been a problem for the Leps, whose 94 points is tops in WPIAL's Class AAA.

I"I'm happy with the way we've been playing but we're going to have to play our game," said Krepps.
