There is no substitute for a lawyer, but a database available through the library gives you the tools to help you get started in creating legal forms.
Law Depot provides access to do-it-yourself legal forms. To access this resource, visit your local library's database page on their website.
To get started, create a username and password. This is helpful because Law Depot saves the different documents you have created, and you can access the information at a later time.
Two weeks ago, I wrote about Zinio, which is owned by the same company as Law Depot. If you have a Zinio account, you can use that same username and password to access Law Depot.
After creating an account, you can browse different forms. There are thousands of do-it-yourself forms grouped under one of six categories: estate, real estate, financial, business, family and other.
One of the features about Law Depot is that it asks for the state of residence so that the form is customized to the state.
State laws are taken into consideration on how the form should be constructed.
In addition, there is a law dictionary to help you answer questions, or there is a toll-free number or an electronic chat that allows you to ask questions to someone while you are filling out the form.
