Library offers summer fun
The Mt. Pleasant Free Public Library will again offer summer reading programs designed to keep minds active during the warm months. The summer reading programs will be held now through July 31. Preschool reading will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays or Thursdays, elementary reading from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays and “tween” reading from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays. The Bug Club for elementary children is held from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m. every Friday. Registration is required for the bug club only. All programs are open to all. = You all still have plenty of time to stop over at the Mt. Pleasant Volunteer firemen’s fair which is going on now through Saturday. Tonight will feature rides at 50 cents each. Prizes will be given out each night and a bicycle will be given away Thursday. Food and plenty of games will be available all week through Saturday. Every night, the fair will provide wonderful live entertainment for all to enjoy. Tonight will feature Xtreme Sounds, Thursday will feature Kortney Jean & Stampede, Friday will feature Leaving Limo and Saturday crowds can enjoy the sounds of Back in Time. All entertainment will begin at 8 p.m. All proceeds from the fair will go to the fire department. This is one of the only fundraising events held by our firemen, so try to attend and support our local heroes.
= An American Red Cross blood drive will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Mt. Pleasant Elks located on the diamond. The drive is open to the public. All those who wish to donate must have a photo ID.
= Sesame Place is a fun Sesame Street theme park that is located north of Philadelphia, catering to the little ones and to the kid in us all. With fuel prices at a high, a group of parents is putting together a bus trip to visit the park and spend the day. Cost for the trip will be $99 per person, which will include round-trip transportation, park entrance and a meal voucher. The trip is slated to take place on Aug. 2. Bus will leave at 6 a.m. and return at approximately midnight. A continental breakfast is also included. For information, call 724-626-0302.
= The Mt. Pleasant area summer basketball camp will be held from June 23 to 26 at the Mt. Pleasant Area High School gym. The camp is open to students in first through 12th grades; cost of $10 is due at sign-up. For information, call 724-493-7106.
= Plans are in the making for the annual Mt. Pleasant Community Day/School Picnic that will be held on July 7 at Idlewild Park. Hosted by the Mt. Pleasant Historical Society, the event will be a day of family gathering with fun and friends thrown in for good measure. One of the day’s highlights will again be the big afternoon giveaway, featuring prizes from many local businesses and organizations. The historical society would like any business or group interested in donating to the event to please call 724-547-9115. Tickets are now on sale at the reduced rate of $16 and can be purchased at Burn’s Drug, Coke’s Barber Shop, chamber office, Shop ‘n Save, Brady’s Restaurant and Norvelt Pharmacy. = The Patty-O-Rockers Relay for Life team is now selling a Vera Bradley handbag ticket which will offer some great prizes. The ticket will go off from June 30 to July 4, and will be based on the Pennsylvania Lottery 3-digit 7 p.m. drawing. A Cambridge hipster and cell phone will be given away on June 30, a Pinwheel Pink on the go and mini zip wallet will be given away on July 1, a Kensington backpack and checkbook cover will be awarded on July 2, a Yellow Bird large duffle, medium bow cosmetic and curling iron cover will be given away on July 3, and the grand prize of a Seaside Starboard tote, Coastal cosmetic and Nautical wallet will be given away on July 4. Cash prizes will also be given in addition to all prizes. Tickets are only $5 and can be purchased by calling 724-547-5319. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
= A tennis camp for youths age 7 to 14 will be held from June 23 to 27 at the Mt. Pleasant High School courts. Camp will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with the cost of $30 per student and is open to both girls and boys. For information, call 724-547-5148.
= In an effort to reach out to the community and become more involved and visible, the Laurel Highlands Chamber of Commerce will be collecting nonperishable food items for the Westmoreland County Food Bank. All nonperishable food items, paper products and cleaning items will be accepted and greatly appreciated. Drop-off sites include Wilson Chiropractic, Herbalicious, Tony’s Car Care in New Stanton and the chamber office located in the In-Town Shops. Any and all donations will be appreciated.
