A British lifeguard says he survived a lightning strike by wearing rubber flip-flops.

Dan Stirling told the Mirror he was on the telephone in a lifeguard hut at Chapel Porth beach near Newquay in Cornwall. He felt a shock and was hurled to the other side of the room.

"I am lucky to be alive," he said.

He believes that what saved his life was his footwear because the rubber served as insulation.

The hut seems to be a lucky building. Another lifeguard was reportedly hit by lightning there three years ago and also survived.
