General manager Dave Littlefield said there might be some changes to the 40-man roster so players can be called up when rosters expand Sept. 1.

“We’ll evaluate all of it,” Littlefield said.

Infielders Steven Pearce and Brian Bixler would have to be added to the 40-man before being called up. The players who join the team when rosters expand should not expect to get much playing time.

“It’s more a get-a-taste type thing — being around the scene, the major league parks, the TV, the competition,” Littlefield said. &#149 The Giants are expected to select a pitcher off the Pirates’ 40-man roster to complete the Matt Morris trade. The Giants, desperate for bullpen help, could be eying Josh Sharpless or Jonah Bayliss. &#149 Tonight’s makeup doubleheader at PNC Park will be the first Pirates-Giants twinbill since July 27, 1997. &#149 Adam LaRoche hit his 17th homer Saturday, the most by a Pirates first baseman since Kevin Young hit 20 in 2000. &#149 Correction from Sunday’s editions: Freddy Sanchez was ranked the third-best defensive second baseman in Baseball America’s annual “best tools” list. &#149 Outfielder Michael Ryan (Indiana, Pa.) was named Indianapolis’ player of the month. In July, Ryan batted .299 and led the International League with 10 home runs.

Digits 14 – Consecutive games in which the Pirates have turned a double play. 11-2 – Pirates record in their past 13 games at AT&T Park
