Game commissionprobes bear attack
Pennsylvania Game Commission officials are investigating a reported black bear attack on two people Saturday at a Fayette County zoo.
The incident at the Woodland Zoo & More in Farmington occurred shortly after 2 p.m. when an unidentified relative of Sonny and Jill Herring, who own the 12-year-old facility, decided to give other relatives and friends a "backstage" tour, Jill Herring said Sunday.
While passing the bear's section of the facility, a few unidentified members of the group neared the cage and the animal reacted by swiping at them and making bodily contact with them with one of its paws, Herring said.
One of the victims, a female, suffered injuries significant enough to be flown via medical helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., said a Fayette 911 dispatcher. Another victim -- reportedly a male who came to the first victim's aid -- was treated at The Uniontown Hospital and released, the dispatcher said.
"They were minor injuries, nothing major at all," Herring said. "We've never had anything like this happen, and we hope nothing like this ever happens again."
The bear will not be euthanized in the wake of the incident, Herring said. According to the zoo's Web site, the facility also houses Russian, Syrian, Kodiak and Himalayan bears.
Steve Leiendecker, Fayette County's wildlife conservation manager for the state Game Commission, is investigating. He could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Thanksgiving deadlyroad holiday
As millions of motorists prepare to hit the highways for the Thanksgiving holiday, PennDOT Secretary Allen D. Biehler is reminding motorists that 64 people died in crashes during last year's holiday in Pennsylvania.
The Thanksgiving driving period, which includes the weekend before, the night before Thanksgiving, the holiday and the weekend after, was the deadliest of all holiday periods in 2006.
According to PennDOT, there were 4,687 crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday period last year.
To help ensure safety on the highways, Pennsylvania will again participate in the national Click-It-or-Ticket crackdown today through Sunday. PennDOT is investing more than $500,000 to fund overtime enforcement by almost 400 municipal and state police departments. As part of Click-It-or-Ticket, motorists who are stopped and cited for a moving violation and not wearing a seat belt will receive a second ticket and second fine.
