Local roundup: Fox Chapel boys soccer team nets key win
Sophomore Cole Ryan scored two goals and Fox Chapel played solid defense, as the Foxes cruised to a somewhat surprising 4-0 win over rival Plum in a key Section 3-AAA game on Saturday.
Fox Chapel (7-2-1, 5-1-1) scratched out a 1-0 victory over Plum (5-3-1, 4-3-1) on Sept. 11. The Foxes gained a better hold on second place in the section with Saturday’s win.
Fox Chapel’s Connor Duquette and Shota Furuhata also chipped in goals, and goalkeepers Jacob Henry and Matt Herrmann shared the shutout with four and three saves, respectively.
“This win puts us in a more comfortable situation,” Fox Chapel coach Erik Ingram said. “We’re kind of in the driver’s seat to make the final section game a deciding factor. This game was not necessarily expected. We played a very good style of soccer.”
Fox Chapel’s only section loss was to Central Catholic (11-2, 8-1). The Foxes have four section games left before hosting Central Catholic for a section finale on Oct. 11.
Burrell 4, Derry 0 — Josh Wertkin scored twice, Alex White made nine saves, and Burrell (9-0-1, 7-0-1) recorded its sixth shutout of the season in a Section 1-AA win over Derry (4-6, 4-5). The undefeated Bucs are ranked No. 5 by Trib Total Media.
Valley 1, Mt. Pleasant 0 — Dominic Guzzi produced the game-winning goal, and Josh Noel had five stops for Valley (8-1-2, 7-0-2) in a Section 1-AA win over Mt. Pleasant (1-10, 1-7).
Deer Lakes 5, Freeport 0 — Junior Shane Mullen recorded a hat trick to lead Deer Lakes (8-4, 5-4) past Freeport (1-10-1, 0-8) in Section 2-AA. Dan Gruber made five saves for the Lancers, who notched their second shutout in a row.
Highlands 4, Kittanning 0 — Senior Michael Masarik netted a pair of goals and assisted on another, and Bob Reeseman collected nine saves, as Highlands (5-5, 4-3) cruised past Kittanning (2-10, 1-8) in Section 2-AA.
Knoch 4, Deer Lakes 1 — Knoch (8-4, 6-3) increased its grip on third place in Section 2-AA with a victory over fourth-place Deer Lakes (6-4-2, 3-4-2). Katie Czekalski, Audra Hunter, Gabi Lassinger and Olivia Sharbaugh scored for the Knights.
Springdale 2, Oakland Catholic 0 — Casey Hughes and Brittany Smajda scored, and Allison Seiler made eight saves, as Class A Springdale (6-6) blanked Class AAA Oakland Catholic (5-6-1).
Gateway 2, Fox Chapel 0 — Fox Chapel (11-1, 6-1), ranked No. 3 by Trib Total Media, was upset by Gateway (9-1-1, 7-0-1) in Section 3-AAA. Carly Seneca scored twice for Gateway. Fox Chapel had shut out 10 of its previous 11 opponents.
Kiski Area junior Brent Kennedy took second place with a time of 15:33.15 at Carlisle’s Puma Meet of Champions, which attracted 24 teams from Pennsylvania and nearby states. The girls race featured runners from 15 schools, and Kiski Area freshman Megan Aller placed 16th (19:47.69), and sophomore Lauren Smeltzer finished 27th (20:05.81).
Class AA Freeport took first place in the silver bracket by edging Class AAA Altoona, 2-1, at State College’s Little Lion Invitational. More than 20 teams, including some of the top squads in the state, competed. The tournament started with pool play, and based on records, teams qualified for either the gold or silver bracket.
