Local roundup: Springdale boys soccer team edges Riverview

Springdale's Jared Cole scored in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, Will Noble netted the game-winning goal at the beginning of the second extra period, and the Dynamos slipped by rival Riverview, 2-1, on Monday night in Section 2-A action.

Springdale (4-0, 3-0) grabbed sole possession of first place in the section on Noble's unassisted goal. Cole chipped in his goal off a corner kick with 40 seconds to play in regulation.

Riverview (2-2, 2-1) took the lead early in the second half on a goal by Cole Quinio.

Joey Wysocki stopped four shots for Springdale, including two in overtime. Sam Gonsowski made 10 saves for Riverview.

“We got behind early in the second half, and then played until the last second,” Springdale coach Cesareo Sanchez said. “We never game up.”

Boys soccer

Burrell 3, East Allegheny 1 — In continuation of a Section 1-AA game suspended last Tuesday because of bad weather, Pete Spagnolo scored twice, and his brother, Tom, added a goal to rally Burrell (2-0, 1-0) past East Allegheny (1-2, 0-2). Pete Spagnolo also had an assist. East Allegheny scored its goal before the suspension last week and led, 1-0, at halftime.

Girls soccer

Knoch 3, Deer Lakes 1 — In a showdown of undefeated teams, Knoch (4-0, 2-0) clipped Deer Lakes (3-1, 1-1) in Section 2-AA. Krista Burdett, Katie Czekalski and Olivia Sharbaugh found the net for Knoch, while Hope Bailey scored for Deer Lakes.

Highlands 1, Indiana 0 — Natalie Richards scored, and goalkeeper Samantha Kovach preserved the edge with a save with about five minutes left, as Highlands (4-1, 2-0) slipped by Indiana (1-3, 0-2) in Section 2-AA.

Riverview 3, St. Joseph 1 — Nikki Polens recorded a hat trick to lead Riverview (1-2, 1-1) past St. Joseph (0-3, 0-1) in Section 4-A. Nikki Mielecki scored the lone goal for the Spartans.

Springdale 4, Geibel 1 — Meghan Kokoski netted a pair of goals to help lift Springdale (2-2, 2-0) over Geibel (1-3, 0-2) in Section 4-A. The Dynamos allowed only three shots on goal.

Freeport 2, Valley 0 — Megan Manke scored twice, including once on a penalty kick, to propel Freeport (2-2, 1-1) to a Section 2-AA win over Valley (0-3, 0-3).

Girls tennis

Burrell 3, Valley 2 — Burrell (7-1, 4-1) dropped the top two singles matches but won No. 3 singles and both doubles contests to knock off rival Valley (6-2, 4-2) in Section 4-AA. Jaila Manga as well as the teams of Emma Hough and Zoe Zentner and Natalie Artman and Amanda Linden notched victories for the Bucs.

Boys golf

Valley 220, Leechburg 245 — Leechburg's Matt Bartos shot a 4-under par 32 at Lenape Heights Golf Course, but the Class AA Blue Devils came up short against Class AAA Valley. Brandon Ledoux (40) was Valley's medalist.
