Lions Gate Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to the action thriller "Lord of War" starring Nicholas Cage.

Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, the feature film is the story of an arms dealer, played by Cage, who re-evaluates the morality of his occupation while on the run from an Interpol agent, played by Ethan Hawke.

"Andrew has crafted a powerful and provocative film torn from today's headlines, giving audiences a chilling insider's look into the international world of gunrunning," Jon Feltheimer, chief executive of Lions Gate Entertainment, said.

"'Lord of War' does for weapons smuggling what 'Blow' did for drug smuggling -- it's controversial, compelling and enormously entertaining."
