Loud bang concerns residents near Pittsburgh International Airport

A loud bang at Pittsburgh International Airport this morning came from the Allegheny County Bomb Squad detonating some items, North Fayette police said.

Several neighbors called police after hearing the explosion about 11:30 a.m., wondering if there was some type of emergency. Police said the bomb squad occasionally will detonate old ammunition, fireworks and other items on airport property.

Neighbors usually are notified in advance, but police said North Fayette residents weren't notified and the noise apparently was louder than usual.

Officials with the bomb squad couldn't be reached.
