Lucite clearly seeing growth as a fashion option

You can see right through this trend.

Lucite -- a transparent or translucent plastic -- is a hot accessory for spring and summer.

Lucite is a resin that was first used for making jewelry because it was inexpensive and easy to work with. It could be manufactured in most any color, offers an exceptional gloss and is abrasion-resistant.

"We have seen lots of Lucite jewelry," says Laura Schara, Macy's trend expert. "It is trendy and there are so many different pieces available to choose from - from statement necklaces to rings to bracelets. Mix in other metals to change up the look a bit."

Lucite jewelry can be found in a range of price points for every budget. Its popularity began to build last year, but has exploded this spring and will carry into summer and possibly beyond, says Schara.

"The trend is at a peak," Schara says. "And it's so readily available. Macy's has lots of it."

Lucite takes on different forms, says Gregg Andrews, Nordstrom fashion director, such as clear, colored or frosted. Sometimes it's carved in geometric shapes that give it a more modern look. Lucite's also being created in floral shapes, as well as embedded with stones for a more artful flair.

"Lucite used to get cloudy or yellow over time, but it doesn't do that anymore," Andrews says. "It's a much better investment because the technology has been perfected. Lucite pieces can be incorporated into day and evening wear. This is jewelry women can wear all year long because of its versatility."

Because it goes with pretty much everything, you don't have to worry about trying to match your jewelry to your outfit, says Hedy Gold, accessories director for Self.

"Lucite is a fun accessory," Gold says.

When choosing Lucite accessories, think chic art deco, not space age, says Suzanne Mauro, a stylist accredited by the Association of Image Consultants International. Bold architectural-cut jackets and draped dresses look modern when paired with Lucite accessories. Try a Lucite bib necklace on a plain-white or grey T-shirt.

Lucite is one of the elements jewelry designer Gerry Florida, from Braddock Hills, uses in her creative pieces. She appreciates its vintage appeal.

"Some of my pieces have lots of Lucite in them, while others only have some, depending on what I find when I go on my scavenger hunts," Florida says. "You can find Lucite in lots of old jewelry. Some is clear, but it doesn't have to be. I really love working with Lucite and the pieces I create are unique and fun to wear. Lucite adds something different to an outfit."
