The Fayette County Courthouse will once be transformed into a Christmas wonderland of beauty when the annual “Magic and Mistletoe” event takes place at the historic site, just in time to kick off the holiday season.

The event is a fundraiser for the Fayette County Community Action Agency.

“It’s growing in attendance every year,” FCCAA program director Brooke Tibbe said of the holiday event that drew more than 300 visitors last year. “Naturally we want to see even more come this year.”

The special holiday event invited the public to step into the courthouse, which will be awash in holiday splendor.

“All five of the courtrooms will be decorated,” Tibbe said, adding that many of the doors to offices and rooms located throughout the building will also be lavishly decorated as part of a contest in which visitors can then vote for their favorites. “People really go all out for the door decorating, and the courtrooms all look wonderful.”

A true family event, children attending can visit with Santa, make gingerbread men, take part in crafts and take a horse-drawn carriage ride.

There will also be a Chinese auction and a silent auction held for the participants to enjoy.

“Right now we have about 50 items,” Tibbe said of the auctions. “We have some really nice things, overnight stays and lots of tickets for various types of entertainment. There is a lot of really, really nice stuff.”

The event will also feature a gingerbread contest that will show the works created by students from local schools.

All of the gingerbread house displays will be featured in one area.

And there will be food.

“There will be lots of food,” Tibbe said of the various dishes and appetizers that will be on hand, prepared and donated by several local businesses and organizations. “Each of the courtrooms will have food, and there will also be food in the hallways.”

The popular event has become a successful fundraiser for the FCCAA, which then uses the money to help local families.

“The money that we raise is used to help families in crisis situations,” Tibbe said. “It’s for families who just need emergency help on a one-time basis with things such as food, utilities or housing.”

Tibbe said that the holiday event draws people from the Uniontown area, and she hopes to see even more come from other areas.

The annual Magic and Mistletoe will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $15 at Christian Klay Winery, FCCAA, Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, Fayette County Courthouse, HR Department, Greater Connellsville Chamber of Commerce, Holiday Inn, Monday through Friday and the Simply Sweet Shoppe.

Tickets at the door will be $20.

Children under 10 will be admitted for free. Free parking is available at the Penn Street Garage.
