Malaysia ends state of air emergency

A state of emergency in Malaysia has been lifted after air pollution lowered to acceptable levels, the BBC reports. The emergency was declared Thursday and Malaysian officials are blaming intentional brush fires in Indonesia for the heavy smog that surrounded Kuala Lumpur and outlying areas. Workplaces and schools were closed due to the smog that triggered unusually high numbers of asthma attacks. Seven people may have died from the haze as well. Wong Teck Kiong of the Malaysian Meteorological Department said that if winds pick up again the smog will too. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
