A South African who reported his cell phone had been stolen faces perjury charges after absentmindedly taking the phone from his pocket to call his employer. The 37-year-old unidentified man told police officers his cell phone was stolen at gunpoint by three men, the Capetown Cape Argus reported Monday. He reported the alleged crime at the Gugulethu police station, and then asked officers if he could use their phone to call his employer because he would be late for work. However, when officers asked for the employer's telephone number, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a cell phone and began scrolling through its directory. Officers checked its serial number and determined that phone was the same one the man had just reported as being stolen. The man was immediately arrested. © Copyright 2004 by United Press International
