A Monroeville man accused of running over two pedestrians early Tuesday morning now faces additional charges of homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter in the death of a Plum man.

Joseph Edward Collins, 21, of Skyview Drive, was initially held on $25,000 bond for suspicion of driving under the influence, with blood and urine tests expected to be released this week.

Collins was served with the additional charges late Tuesday at the Allegheny County Jail, where he was arraigned by a county deputy coroner.

Collins is being held without bond pending an inquest by the county Coroner's Office scheduled for 10 a.m. Nov. 6.

The accident occurred about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday as two pedestrians were walking along Old William Penn Highway near the Monroeville water plant. Gregory Pearson, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene. Monroeville police Chief George Polnar said Pearson's body had been pushed over the guardrail and into the creek.

The other victim, who was seriously injured, was found lying face down in the road. At the request of his family, his name is not being released. Police Wednesday said the victim remains in critical condition at UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Oakland. He is expected to survive.

According to police, Collins was standing next to a green 1997 Chevrolet Malibu, which had damage to all four sides. The vehicle was on a hillside on the opposite side of the road.

Police said he failed three field sobriety tests before he was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital for blood and urine tests.
