A man was fatally shot outside Manchester Elementary School this afternoon as some students were being dismissed.
The man, who was not identified by police, was shot in the 1300 block of Juniata Street, in a courtyard between two apartment buildings.
Dozens of city police officers and detectives were on scene collecting evidence. Numerous people stood in groups watching the investigators. A woman came to the scene, identified by police only as a relative of the victim, and fell to the ground, sobbing.
The school was locked down and students were moved to the other side of the building, police said.
El Gray, program manager for the violence prevention group One Vision One Life, arrived with other outreach workers. He threw up his hands in frustration.
"I can't believe this," he said. "How many more men have to die before this nonsense stops?"
No further details were available.
