A train hit and killed a man about 9 p.m. Wednesday off Cedar Avenue on the North Shore, Pittsburgh police said.

According to the engineer, a middle-aged, white man walked onto the tracks as the train, owned by Norfolk-Southern, proceeded northbound. The engineer repeatedly sounded the horn, but the man lay across the tracks. The engineer braked but was not able to stop in time.

Medics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

No other information was immediately available.
