Man with history of DWI gets 6 years
A New Mexico man prosecutors say have been convicted of drunken driving 15 times has been sentenced to six years in prison.
Daniel LeFebre of Santa Fe admitted to a total of six convictions since 1999, five in Santa Fe or Albuquerque and one in Arizona, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported. But Donna Bevacqua-Young, a special prosecutor, told a judge in Santa Fe she believes that LeFebre has been convicted at least 15 times, beginning in 1985 when he was 21.
"He's been drinking and driving for 20 years, which is mind boggling," Bevacqua-Young said. "It seems the defendant has not learned any lessons."
LeFebre apologized to his mother, his family and the Santa Fe police department in a statement to the court. He reportedly claimed when he was stopped for traffic violations that he was an undercover police officer.
LeFebre's lawyer said that he has come to terms with his alcoholism and has been trying to live a sober life. He is now in prison for violating probation.
