Manor's public-safety committee will look at options to replace the police department's 2015 Ford Expedition that was totaled earlier this month.
The sport-utility vehicle was totaled after a one-vehicle crash Aug. 8 while officers were trying to stop a quad near the railroad tracks in the borough. The vehicle had been bought earlier this year for $29,682 through the South Hills Area Council of Governments.
Because the Expedition hadn't been in commission long, it is unclear how much of the cost the borough will recoup through insurance, borough manager Joe Lapia said.
“The vehicle is so new, there's no information out for them on how to price it,” Lapia said.
Council voted 4-0 — with Steve Ira and Brian Woy absent — to have the public-safety committee search for a new vehicle. The committee includes Woy, Council President Dawn Lynn and Councilman Mike Matrisch.
How much they'll have to spend is unknown. Officials set a cap of $6,000 more than the money received from the insurance claim, but Lapia said a hard budget for the new vehicle wasn't possible.
“We can't give you one because we don't know the number from the insurance company,” Lapia said during last week's meeting.
On Tuesday, he said the insurance company still hadn't indicated how much it would pay. Waiting for the next council meeting — when more insurance information will be available — would mean waiting longer to get the new vehicle. Lapia said he expected it to take three months to get the vehicle.
“It's just that much longer down the road before you get a new car on the road,” Lapia said.
Police Chief George Valmassoni said he was unsure what vehicle the department could get and pointed out that two other vehicles the department has are getting older and likely will need to be replaced soon.
A 2008 Crown Victoria has more than 100,000 miles, and a 2013 Interceptor Sedan has more than 80,000 miles.
“It's going to be dependant on what the final figure comes back at,” he said.
