A 47-year-old Maryland man has been put to death for killing a woman as her grandchildren watched.

Wesley Eugene Baker of Baltimore was declared dead at 9:18 p.m. Monday after being injected with a combination of lethal chemicals. He was the fifth person put to death in Maryland since 1976 when the U.S. Supreme Court allowed states to resume capital punishment.

Baker was convicted of the June 6, 1991, killing of Jane Tyson, 49, who was shot once in the head as she was getting into her car at a shopping mall. Her 6-year-old and 4-year-old grandchildren were in the car when she was shot. The killer took the woman's purse, which contained about $10, police said.

Four members of the victim's family witnessed the execution.
