The president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas is in line to be the next chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. Robert D. McTeer Jr. was approved as the lone finalist for the post during a telephone meeting of the regents Wednesday, the Houston Chronicle reported. He was one of 70 candidates for the post. "I'm very excited about it and looking forward to the challenge of changing careers in a move that's almost 180 degrees," McTeer told the newspaper. McTeer would replace Benton Cocanougher, who has served as interim chancellor since the retirement of Howard Graves in 2003 for health reasons. Graves later died from cancer. McTeer was approached by regents for the post and he said they saw him as a non-traditional candidate because he had more business experience than academic experience. McTeer has been president of the Fed branch in Dallas for 13 years. Robert Gates, a former Central Intelligence Agency director, is the president of Texas A&M University. © Copyright 2004 by United Press International
