Medical taxi

I know we are a burden to everyone, but short of killing or institutionalizing us, we - the elderly and handicapped citizens - need help ('WCTA may shut down free rides,' June 26).

Without the medical taxi service operated by the Westmoreland County Transit Authority, which provides door-to-door service to doctors' offices and hospitals, a person using a wheelchair, walker or cane would have to get himself to a bus stop that could be miles from his home - in all kinds of weather. He would have to board a bus, go to the terminal and transfer to another bus bound for his destination. Then from the bus stop, he would have to propel himself to an office building possibly several blocks away. (By the way, are all the sidewalk curbs cut everywhere, or do we have to ride or walk in the street?)

Granted, all this would cost only the usual bus fare, but is this what you want your relatives, neighbors or friends who may be handicapped or elderly to do to be able to seek medical care•

Why do we play the lottery in this county, if we don't reap the benefits•
