Medical device manufacturer Medrad Inc. of Marshall may layoff an unspecified number of workers by the end of the year because of the restructuring by its parent company, Bayer Corp., Medrad spokeswoman Luanne Radermacher said.

Bayer announced last week it would cut about 4,500 jobs, while adding 2,500 jobs in developing countries. It’s part of a plan to cut costs by $1.1 billion annually, starting in 2013.

Medrad employees were told last week the cost-cutting moves would begin within four-to-six weeks, Radermacher said.

“We’re trying to make it (layoffs) as small as possible. It’s certainly not our first option,” in reducing costs, she said.

Medrad has about 1,400 employees at its headquarters and three manufacturing plants in the Pittsburgh region.

Tuesday, Medrad was named a winner of the 2010 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest presidential honor for business, the Commerce Department said.
