Jim Alder , 50, of Banksville, has been a bartender at Sam's Bar along West Liberty Avenue since 1996. Good bartenders "see it all but remember nothing," Alder said.

How would you describe Sam's• It's a "Cheers"-type bar, where everyone knows one another. You can basically walk in any time and you'll know somebody in there. Usually, when someone stops in once, they'll come back.

What's your biggest bartending peeve• If someone taps their bottle or glass on the bar to try to get service. They don't need to do that, just be patient, and I'll get to you.

You've been doing this for awhile -- is there a way to spot an inexperienced bartender• I think it's basically how they handle people. Whether you're getting people a drink when they need one or being observant of what's going on.

Do you prefer tending bar at a restaurant or club, or a bar• I like a place that's just a bar -- that way you're a one-man operation. You don't have to deal with any food, or waitresses stepping on your feet, or people chattering around you. You can focus on your customers.

Were you surprised to find out that someone nominated you for our bartender of the week story• I was sort of surprised, but we have really nice customers. Sam's isn't very visual from the outside, but once you get in, it's a nice little place.
