The state Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public hearing Wednesday about a plan to clean up a former zinc smelting site in Washington County. The 7 p.m. meeting will be held at Smith Township Municipal Building in Slovan.
The site along Route 18 near Burgettstown is contaminated with lead, arsenic, cadmium, zinc, copper, tin, antimony and other materials. American Zinc and Chemical Co. operated there from 1914 to 1945.
Cyprus Amax Minerals Co. and DEP in June agreed to clean up the site owned by Langeloth Metallurgical Co., Bologna Coal Co. and Peterson Industries Inc. The state will help pay the cost of cleanup.
Direct questions about the plan to Terry Goodwald of DEP at 412-442-4000. Send written comments to DEP at Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
