The Richard King Mellon Foundation is injecting some young blood into its leadership. Effective today, the foundation has more than doubled the number of trustees, from five to 11, with the addition of a new generation of Mellons: Alison M. Byers and W. Russell G. Byers Jr., the daughter and son of the late Constance Mellon Byers; Catharine Mellon Cathey and Constance Elizabeth Mellon Kapp, the daughters of Seward Prosser Mellon, president and CEO of the foundation; and Armour N. Mellon and Richard A. Mellon, the sons of foundation Chairman Richard P. Mellon. "The significance is really bringing on the next generation of Mellons to get them involved in the foundation," said trustee Michael Watson. "Dick and Pross just felt it was time," he said. "They're grown up and responsible people, and they all expressed a keen interest in the foundation. This is a way of getting them involved." Also today, the 65-year-old Watson becomes senior vice president and gives up his job as director to Scott D. Izzo. Izzo had served as associate director since 1997. "I'll still continue to focus on civic things in Pittsburgh and land programs," Watson said. "Scott will run the foundation and be involved in Southwestern Pennsylvania and conservation." With assets of $1.7 billion as of Dec, 31, the foundation is one of the largest philanthropies in the country.
