Memorial Day services and events have been scheduled at various locations in the area. They include:
• Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Roy Frick Booher American Legion Post 325, Cowansville.
• The Ford City Lions Club will use the fire siren during the Memorial Eve service at 10 p.m. Sunday to alert residents to vountarily extinguish all lights. Traffic will be stopped for 20 minutes during the service.
• The Rural Valley American Legion will sponsor the Rural Valley Memorial Day Parade at 11 a.m. Monday. Anyone interested in participating is asked to assemble at 10:30 a.m. in the alley behind Christoff's Original Rural Valley Bakery.
• A service will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Monday at the West Kittanning Honor Roll wall. Questions may be directed to Mickey at 724-548-8822.
• The Ford City Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ford City American Legion will have a Memorial Day parade at 9:15 a.m. Monday. Parade route begins at Ford City High School and will end at the borough park where a service will be held. Guest speaker is Dean Noechel, commander elect, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4843. The Ford City Heritage Choir will sing and selections will be performed by the Ford City High School Band. The Ford City Post 4843 Auxiliary will hold a service.
After the service, the procession will proceed to the Ford City Veteran's Bridge where a wreath will be placed in the water.
• The Leechburg Memorial Day Parade will be held Monday. All participating units are asked to be in Leechburg no later than 9:30 a.m. when the parade will form at the flagpole area on Second Street and at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post home. Parade begins at 10. After the parade, ceremonies will be held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Market Street. Featured speaker is Retired Air Force Maj. Anthony Shea.
After the ceremonies at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, ceremonies will be held at St. Catherine's Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Joe Trupkovich of Christ the King Parish and at the Leechburg Bridge. Parade Grand Marshal will be former Army Capt. Anthony J. Defilippi. Officer of the day will be Retired Air Force Maj. Anthony Shea. Master of Ceremonies will be John "Jack" Walker. The Leechburg Area High School Band and the Marconi Band will participate. Ken Klugh will donate the flatbed truck and the Leechburg Lions will provide the PA system. Dinners will be held at some locations for marchers. Parade chairman is Leechburg Council President and former Army Capt. Anthony J. Defilippi.
• The East Brady American Legion Post 488 lists its Memorial Day schedule for Monday: Participants are to meet at the post for practice 8 a.m. Flag raising at the post 8:30, Perry Township Honor Roll at 9, Robinson Cemetery (Hillville) 9:30, Sgt. Carl F. Curran II Memorial Bridge with Unit 402 at 10, Oak Grove Cemetery Route 268 at 10:30, Bradys Bend Cemetery 11, St. Mary's Cemetery (Bradys Bend) 11:30, and Bradys Bend Honor Roll with Unit 402 at noon. Those participating are asked to return to the post for lunch after Bradys Bend Honor Roll service.
• An open house will be held, after the Dayton Memorial Day service, 11 a.m.-2 p.m Monday at the Marshall House Museum, 107 N. State St., Dayton. A display will focus on the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Refreshments will be served.
• Freeport's annual observance will be hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6648 on Monday. Activities commence at 9:30 a.m. as the parade departs Freeport Junior High School on Riverside Drive. The parade route will follow Buffalo Street to Fifth Street, Market Street, Second Street to Riverside Drive. Riverfront services will be held at 10 in front of the Freeport Tower to honor those who have fought and died in the nation's wars. Guest speaker is Freeport High School choir director, Army Staff Sgt. Tom Koharchik. Participants include Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6648, Freeport Fire Department and EMS, Freeport High School Band and Choir, Freeport Community Choir, vehicles from the 332nd Engineering Company, members of the 78th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and other local groups. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6648 invites any member of the community who has had military service active, reserve, guard, retired, to march with the VFW as a participant of the parade. Those interested are asked to be at the junior high school at 9:15 for the lineup. In case of inclement weather, services will be held in the Freeport Junior High School auditorium.
Flags will be placed on veterans' graves in the local cemeteries including Freeport, St. Mary's, McVille, and Slate Lick. Anyone interested in helping is asked to meet at the Freeport Veterans of Foreign Wars at 1 p.m. Friday.
Collection bins will be available at the Memorial Day service for nonperishable food items for Freeport Area Food Bank and for worn/used flags that will be disposed of at the "Retirement of the Flag" ceremony on June 14.
• Kittanning Memorial Day parade forms at 10 a.m. Monday at the corner of Vine and North McKean streets. Parade begins at 11 a.m. and will move east on Vine Street to North Grant Avenue, south on North Grant Avenue to Market Street, west on Market Street to Jefferson Street, south on Jefferson Street to Jacob Street and to the John P. Murtha Amphitheater. Parade will have these bands: Kittanning High School Wildcat Marching Band, Kittanning Fireman's Band, a bagpipe band, marching units and two floats accompanied by fire departments. The parade is sponsored by AMVETS Post 13 Kittanning and John T. Crawford Camp 43 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. A ceremony will be conducted at the amphitheater at about noon. Various musical selections will be played or sung. National anthem will be played by the Kittanning High School Wildcat Marching Band. Various speakers include political dignitaries and veterans groups. Keynote speaker is Brig. Gen. James R. Hendrickson. The parade will be held rain or shine and the ceremony will be held at Kittanning Hose Company No. 1 in case of inclement weather.
