A boatload of illegal immigrants stranded at sea was saved when their message in a bottle asking for help was found by fishermen in the Caribbean.

The fishermen found the bottle off the coast of the Cocos Islands some about miles from Costa Rica, El Heraldo reported Monday in its online edition.

The 86 passengers on board were from Peru and Ecuador and had been adrift for several days.

According to their accounts, the smugglers that were supposed to bring the illegal immigrants to Guatemala abandoned the vessel.
