A memorial service will be held June 1 for A. Warne Boyce, who expanded a single dairy laboratory in the North Side into the Wexford-based Microbac Laboratories — the fifth-largest independent laboratory group in the United States.

Mr. Boyce, of O'Hara Township, died from complications of liver cancer on Thursday, May 9, 2002, in his home. He was 72.

Mr. Boyce, a native of South Africa, played rugby for Oxford University in England and arrived in the United States in 1962 with his wife, Doreen Boyce, who now heads the Buhl Foundation.

In the ensuing years, Mr. Boyce, besides establishing his own company, was the founder of the Pittsburgh Rugby Club, executive committee member of the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce and president of the Smaller Manufacturers Council.

He also served as president of the Pittsburgh Dance Council and had memberships on the boards of the Pittsburgh Opera, Pressley Ridge School and St. Edmund's Academy. His memberships included the Duquesne Club, Longvue Club and the Stonington Country Club in Connecticut.

Mr. Boyce is survived by his wife, Doreen Boyce; daughter, Caroline Boyce of New Cumberland, Cumberland County; son, J. Trevor Boyce of Poquoson, Va., and four grandchildren.

The June 1 memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Ellsworth Avenue, Oakland.

Interment is private. Arrangements by H. Samson, Neville Street, Oakland.
