One day before she became a WPIAL champion, Martina Milcic officially became a college athlete.

Milcic signed her National Letter of Intent on May 16, the day before the WPIAL Track & Field Championships, to join the team at Seton Hill in the fall.

A discus and shot put thrower for the Knights, Milcic established herself as the top shot putter in western Pennsylvania last week when she won at the WPIAL meet with a personal-best throw of 40 feet, 8 inches.

“I think I decided on Seton Hill about a month ago. I’ve always really liked the campus. It’s a beautiful campus, and I think I can really fit in well then,” Milcic said.

“I got to the point where I realized my track season is almost over and it’s almost the end of the year, so I decided on Seton Hill because I think it’ll be the best fit.”

Milcic chose to join the Griffins over schools including St. Francis (Pa.) and Pitt-Johnstown, both for the track team and for its academic programs.

The Norwin senior intends to follow a premed path on the way to graduate work in the area of physical therapy.

On the athletic side of things, Milcic will have a chance to contribute right away, especially in her better event, the shot put.

Her winning throw from the WPIALmeet already would eclipse Seton Hill’s 3-year-old school record in the event, 12.12 meters, which converts to approximately 39 feet, 4 3⁄4 inches.

With that in mind, Milcic knows she still has to continue improving to compete at the college level, and she already has received guidance from her future coach.

“The throws coach, Wes Banks, he competed in college at Louisville and went to Hempfield. He’s a real good coach,” Milcic said.

“He’s already told me how much we’re going to be lifting weights and working out, so Iknow he’ll be pushing me. Ithink it’s going to be a very good environment for me to get better.”

Milcic also will have the chance to add some new events to her repertoire, as college track meets hold a much greater number of events than high school meets.

In addition to the shot put and discus, Milcic will add the hammer throw to her list of outdoor events, as well as the weight toss, an event contested only in indoor meets.
