Mining the city

This concerns the most recent proposal for a new ice arena. I’m struggling to understand why plans (and purchases) made by the Penguins’ investors have suddenly become the responsibility of taxpayers. As I see it: Our area has many individuals who are recently jobless. Who will be purchasing these proposed luxury suites when people can’t afford the regular seats now? A state-of-the-art rink isn’t the only thing that attracts higher-salaried players. Many residents are already staggering under the weight of the city’s tax burden. Will this project demonstrably benefit the people paying the bills? In light of Sept. 11th, maybe we should follow the examples of other great cities and complete our current projects before even considering new ones. The arena proposal is so crowded with half-truths and distortions it’s hard to imagine that anyone was capable of authoring it. And I’m growing weary of watching individuals strip-mine Pittsburgh for personal gain and profit. K. Neilson Downtown
