Vatican officials say that they have evidence that the intercession of John Paul II cured a French nun of Parkinson’s disease. A miracle, or cure that cannot be explained by medicine, is needed for the late pope to be beatified, the Italian news agency ANSA said. Monsignor Slawomir Oder, who heads the panel gathering evidence, said the nun’s story will be investigated in detail. Miracles must be certified by a medical board. “She had the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease,” Oder said. “After praying for the intercession of John Paul II on the day after his death, the symptoms went away.” John Paul suffered from Parkinson’s himself for many years before his death. The panel is also gathering testimony on John Paul’s heroic virtue. © Copyright 2006 by United Press International
