Plans for the interior renovations of the Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority's transit center are moving right along. The board awarded the contract to the Fairchance Construction Company of Fairchance for its low bid of $699,406.

Project architect Ken Kulak assured the board the contractors come highly recommended. Though Kulak said he has never worked with the contractors before he spoke to several persons about present ongoing projects.

'I called several references. All the clients said how pleased they were with the contractors work. One client even rehired them for additional work,' said Kulak.

Board members said they would discuss the possibility of hiring an inspector for critical moments during the renovations on the advice of Kulak.

Kulak said he couldn't be on site overseeing, and to avoid problems an inspector would be in the best interest of the board.

Chairman of the board Ronald Tuman said the board would meet and discuss the issue before the project begins in September.

Board member Nick Lorenzo is determined to fix the bus lane in front of the transit authority. The lane cannot be utilized because of collapsed drainpipe underneath.

The board has contacted the boroughs of North Charleroi and Charleroi and PennDOT trying to solve the problem. Letters have been sent to State Representative Pete Daley.

Nancy Basile, assistant executive director, said Daley forwarded the letter to the District 12 PennDOT office in Uniontown and that is where it has been for more than a month.

The board will send letters to North Charleroi Borough and PennDOT asking them to fix the problem.

'I am going to make sure this problem is solved. I will make the calls myself until something is done,' said Lorenzo.

The board also took action on the following:

  • The board approved the agreement with California University with the Silver Line. The Silver Line will allow university students to ride the buses free.

  • Try Transit week will kickoff Monday, September 10 with planned activities at the Charleroi Pavilion.

  • Senior Citizen Sign ups will be held at the Center of the Hill in Washington Township on Monday, September 10 at 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.
